My father, Rene Bourque, was 30-year-old and a member of the 66th division, when the Leopoldville was sunk. He survived. Until recently I did not know of his history on the Leopoldville. He was discharged from the Army in early 1946 and I was born in November 1946. Growing up he never talked about his survival of the ship’s sinking or any of his Army service in WWII. Recently I found papers that indicated he was a driver for a Rev. Urban Baer stationed at HQ U. S. forces in Austria in late 1945 but have been unable to locate any other service records of his time in the Army with the 66th division or other Army Units. In September of this year (2025) I was fortunate to visit the new memorial in Cherbourg. Any further information that I can obtain about my dad’s service would be wonderful and I will be so grateful. Thank you.
